Alternatives for cruise port Venice

Starting August 1, 2021, large cruise ships will no longer be welcome in Venice. This decision by the Italian government follows threats by UNESCO, the organization that protects World Heritage sites, to declare Venice an endangered heritage site. Smaller ships and sailing yachts do have access to the center. But larger ships now divert to other ports. To give you an overview, we have listed them for you and also how to get to Venice from these ports anyway or how to reach these cruise terminals from the airport.

Venice as a Departure and Arrival Point for Cruises

Venice is a wonderful starting and ending destination for your cruise. You can arrive by plane at Treviso Airport (30 km from Venice) or Marco Polo Airport (12 km). Both airports have good connections to Piazzala Roma. This is a central point in Venice where several transportation options converge.

Treviso: The airport in Treviso has a good bus service from ATVO. The bus runs in about an hour via Mestre to Piazzala Roma (one way about €7).

Marco Polo: There is also an ATVO bus service here (single trip about €8) to Piazzala Roma. From there you can take the Peoplemover (one-way €1.50 per person) to the Cruise Terminal, Marittima stop. Buy your ticket here to be sure of a seat and to avoid waiting.

Luggage storage

Do you have luggage you want to store (temporarily) before or after the cruise? In terminal 103 there is a luggage depot (Left Luggage) where you can leave your suitcase for a fee. This terminal is located on the square where the shuttle buses to Piazzala Roma leave, among other things.

There is also a second luggage storage facility at Venice Santa Lucia train station. It can be found on platform 1. The train station is adjacent to Piazzala Roma and can be reached via a large bridge. Porters (for a fee) are available to carry your bags across the bridge. Please note that there is no train from this station to Marco Polo Airport. For that, you can take one of the previously mentioned options from Piazzala Roma.
